"The Five Biggest Mistakes on the Road

Hi, I'm Rebecca Bradley (Master Certified Coach), Over the past 20 years I have met and coached hundreds of people in the corporate world, government and business just like you. During that time, I've also been doing research on how to have success that makes you happy. I've created a program to share with you the keys to real success. The program is based on the simple but foolproof principles of what I call "Success Beyond Measure". |
"I had everything I'd ever wanted and I'd worked damn hard for it all. And I was more miserable than I'd ever been in my life. I felt empty and I couldn't figure out why." - Arthur - ENT Physician and Entrepreneur
"I arrive at work every day at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. and leave about 6:00 p.m. I am a successful senior executive, but my husband is raising our children and I don't really have much of a relationship with them." - Elaine - SVP of Distribution, National Retail Company
"I am traveling Monday-Friday every week and I'm exhausted, burned out, and I miss my husband. I know it's important to my parents for me to make partner, but I want to have children and have a real marriage. I would love to be able to sing services in my synagogue." - Karen - Senior Consultant, Global Accounting Firm
These painful quotes came from "successful" executives or professionals who were pursuing success in their careers based on the definition of success they learned as children from their parents, neighbors, teachers, and society in general.

"It is when we think we have finally arrived that we recognize that we have ended up in the wrong place".

As each of these individuals, as well as countless others I have coached or interviewed discovered, the success they had created was based on measures that didn't really have much meaning to them - and didn't bring them real, lasting happiness.
In some cases their success was toxic. They had lost friendships, their health, their marriages, and any chance of really experiencing their children as they were growing up. Many felt disillusioned and suffered from depression or stress-related conditions.
How could they have worked so hard and ended up in a place that felt so wrong? If you, like them are "successful" (as most people would define it), but:
Comments like these represent the wisdom that comes from knowing that success measured in terms of the intangible immeasurable things like:
quality of relationships,
a sense of health and well-being,
contribution to others,
living in alignment with one's values, vision and purpose,
and connection to a higher power
...all bring real lasting happiness.
Over the past 20 years I have coached over 600 individuals like you, including middle and senior level managers or business owners, in coaching engagements of 6 months or more. In almost every case there was a gap between where the person was and where they wanted to be.
Together we discovered that they were moving toward a vision of success that wasn't necessarily their own, but came from past messages from parents, competition with siblings or peers, or some general but vague sense of where they "should" be now.
Once people began to define what would have real meaning and purpose for them, they began to make the mid-course corrections necessary to move toward real success.
It's time for you wake up and
Most of us know deep down that the temporary elation we get from titles, a fabulous car or piece of jewelry, or a long list of accomplishments at work, won't really last. And we have all known individuals who weren't wealthy or powerful, but somehow seemed to glow from an inner sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. And yet, we are compelled to respond to the messages of the media, society, our parents, our boss, even our spouse/significant other and children:
Research I have conducted with over 500 individuals from business and government audiences shows that 87% were unable to relax and enjoy life and over 50% said that they sometimes lose sight of what makes them really happy and fulfilled. 75% said that their drive for a nice house and car are higher than they would like it to be. What we can conclude from these responses is that, at least in my studies:
people know they sometimes focus on the wrong things.
Many of my clients over the years have created and are living real successSuccess Beyond Measure. Like you, they were from the business or government sectors; however their ages, careers and positions, motivations, locations, and lessons learned are individual and unique. This program has been co-created from what we (my clients and I) discovered together about how to achieve real meaningful and long lasting success.
The definition of real and lasting success is this:
|
|
You begin every day in gratitude and optimism and go to bed every night feeling fulfilled. |
Sure, we all have bad days. But when we are really truly successful, the small bumps in the road and even the really bad things that can happen sometimes aren't able to rob us of our sense that it's all worth it.
In our most recent catastrophic economic downturn, living one's values and being true to your purpose actually help you navigate troubled waters. Knowing what has meaning and brings peace and contentment enables you to make choices so that you can find something to be grateful for no matter what. A life of focusing on what brings fulfillment creates a stability that temporary setbacks can't undermine.
Because this kind of success is measured in terms of intangible internal measures we alone are able to judge whether we are successful or not.
We are not subject to the pressure of the expectations of others or past messages of the need to achieve the kind of success that others think we "should" have.
We have our own true north that guides every choice and decision we make.
We may enjoy some of the external "pleasures" of life like a nice home and a good car, but we know that we could be happy without those thingsand...
We aren't tempted to put their attainment ahead of things like healthy relationships with loved ones or our health and well being.
Success, real success that is, is not as elusive as it seems. Here are the mistakes that prevent us from getting there ... they can be boiled down to one wordFOCUS:
[Stop reading this right now for just a moment and grab a pen.... Write the letters FOCUS on each finger.... You'll see why in a minute.]
FocusWe focus on everything and nothing (living in fear).
OutsideWe focus on outside vs. inside measures (money/financial security).
CoreWe ignore our core (values, vision, purpose).
Un'sWe deny our "un's" (being unhappy, unhealthy, unbalanced).
ServiceWe serve ourselves-not others (delayed altruism).
Knowing these critical mistakes and how to avoid them can help individuals reclaim their lives and begin to really invest in their own success. With focus and intention, anyone can have a life that they feel grateful for...anyone can feel optimism about the future. And it may seem impossible to some, but fulfillment is possible for everyone.
[If you haven't written the letters on your fingers yet, go ahead and do it now...]
The Five Biggest Mistakes on the Road to Successand How to Avoid Them is an easy step-by-step blueprint to help those who want to take the path to real success. It is chock full of inspiring stories, self-assessments, tools, and action planning guides. It is a roadmap that enables you to custom design the perfect route for you, avoid many of the potholes and detours, and stay the course. It is a personal companion and self-coaching manual that provides focus and tools for self-awareness.
My philosophy is simple. I believe strongly that one of the best ways to learn is from our own experiences. In fact, successful coaches help their clients do just thatto become their own coaches by learning what works and what doesn't and self-correcting.
We can also learn from other people's experiences as well. We can use what they have learned to accelerate our own learning, as a guide through our own uncharted territories, and as a reference for when we feel lost.
A good coach helps bridge the gap between these two possibilities and that is the aim of my FOCUS system. The book gives you a spectrum of learning opportunities from personal stories, suggestions, reflective exercises, and "take action" tasksall designed to help you find Success Beyond Measure by being your very own coach.
Most coaching and personal development programs help people define their picture of success, what they deeply want that they don't have now, and then assess where they are now in relationship to that picture and then chart a course for getting there. The coach's job then becomes one of being an accountability partner, helping the person stay the course.
...One that when given time and attention can prevent detours and dead ends along the path to real success. This important piece is to ask the essential question "Why?" "Why am I here? "Why do I want that? "Why do I think that will be fulfilling, or satisfying, or enduring, or simply bring me peace?"
"Why?" is the question we must ask ourselves each and every day if we are to stay on track with our purpose and get the most out of our day (week, month, life). "Why?" helps us uncover our value, purpose, and vision and find a game worth playing.
My vision is to empower you to step into the very heart and soul of your work and life and to see them with "new eyes". When you do you will be able to gain access to new possibilities and achieve Success Beyond Measure.
I would like to share one of the cool tools from the program with you absolutely free! Do this simple exercise and notice a new level of clarity and focus. Here's how one of my clients put it when she called to report on her promotion and her newfound optimism and fulfillment:
"Do you remember that work we did on values? Well, I must admit that it was hard work, but you really made me think. I'm looking at those top 4 values right now on a sticky on my computer: creativity, challenge, inspiration, and learning. I told my boss I wanted more responsibility and shared my values with him. I said, 'If you want to really get the best out of me, you will help me do work that lets me live those values every day. I don't want to do routine things over and over; I want to create better, more effective ways to do things.' My boss has been promoted and I got his job. I look forward to going to work every day and know that I can have the work and home life that makes me happy. Thank you!!"

Speaking of tools... tool number 2 in the program is the reason I asked you to write the letters F, O, C, U, and S on your fingertips:
Give Yourself a Hand
This tool may seem a little wacky to you, but I ask all my audiences to do this as their 'hand-out' when I have speaking engagements. Take a ball point pen and write the word FOCUS on your finger tips. If you are right-handed, you will begin with the thumb on your left hand; if you are left-handed you will begin with the pinkie on your right hand. As you go through your day you will have a constant reminder for focusing the five points of Success Beyond Measure and on what matters most to you. As the day goes by and you wash your hands, your letters will fade, but try doing this for a week and you will 'anchor' those letters on your fingertips and focusing will become a habit.
Are you happy yet? On page 2 you will find a quick survey that lets you compare your level of happiness to that of thousands of others who are participating in important research on overall life satisfaction and happiness.
In chapter 2 you will be given the FOCUS tool for creating Success Beyond Measure. It's a tried and true, field-tested formula for having what you want and discovering what you need.
Chapter 3 will help you look at how you define success: Have you even thought about it or are you on autopilot? Is your definition working for you? What's missing? We get what we measure. In this powerful chapter you will look at your success measures, where you got them, and what may be much more important to measure.
In chapter 4 you will be guided through 3 powerful exercises to discover your core life principles. While these exercises are simple, they get at the foundational driving forces of your life, bringing you the clarity and focus you may have been missing.
In chapter 5, you will take a look in the mirror to discover what "un's" you been ignoring? Being unhappy, unhealthy unfulfilled...? You will learn how to use these "symptoms" of disease in your life to get back on track.
Would you like to know without a shadow of a doubt that the direction you are taking and the choices you are making are going to bring you Success Beyond Measure?
